Sermon Guide

Lessons from David and Goliath

September 1, 2024
Dr. Allen Holmes

This week, we emphasized the powerful contrast between living a self-centered life, as seen during the chaotic era of the Judges, and the transformative faith demonstrated by David in overcoming Goliath. They challenge us to avoid the pitfalls of both authoritarian control and Christian Nationalism, urging instead a focus on personal spiritual growth and serving others with humility and love. By investing in and guiding the next generation, we can embody Christ’s example, preparing ourselves spiritually to face life's challenges and inspiring young people to follow in His footsteps.

REVIEW: The Pitfalls of Self-Determined Living

  • READ: Judges 21:25 – "In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes."
  • DISCUSS: In what ways does the philosophy of “If it feels good, do it” lead to personal and societal consequences, as illustrated in the Book of Judges? How does the story of David and Goliath provide an alternative approach to making decisions?

REVIEW: Cultivating the Inner Self - Lessons from Saul and David

  • READ: 1 Samuel 16:7 – "But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'"
  • DISCUSS: How do Saul’s and David’s responses to Goliath reflect their inner spiritual and character development? Discuss how cultivating a strong relationship with God prepares us for challenges.

REVIEW: Shaping the Next Generation

  • READ: Matthew 28:19-20 – "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."
  • DISCUSS: How can the story of David and Goliath inspire us to focus on the next generation, both in our personal lives and in ministry? What practical steps can we take to engage and support young people in their spiritual journey?

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the lessons from David and Goliath, which remind us of the power of faith and the importance of our transformation. Guide us away from self-centered living and help us to lead with humility, reflecting Your love and grace in all we do.
