There are three types of forgiveness:
REVIEW: The first type of forgiveness is exoneration (complete release and reconciliation).
- READ: Ephesians 4:32 "Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you."
- DISCUSS: How has the complete exoneration and forgiveness from Jesus affected your ability to show forgiveness and grace toward others?
REVIEW: The second type of forgiveness is forbearance (complete release and partial reconciliation).
- READ: Proverbs 4:23 "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life."
- DISCUSS: Is there anyone in your life you need to forgive (even if you also need to maintain some boundaries in the future)?
REVIEW: The third stage of forgiveness is release (complete release but no reconciliation).
- READ: James 5:16 "Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results."
- DISCUSS: Do any of your painful experiences or relationships still have control over your attitudes, perspectives, or decisions? What would it look like for you to release yourself through forgiveness?
ASK:
What else did you get from this week's sermon? What actions or next steps can you take to apply it to your life?
PRAY:
For the willingness to invite Jesus into our pain, the courage to offer forgiveness where it is needed, and the wisdom to know if, when, and how to respond to those who have hurt us.
