Sermon Guide

The Mountain of Generosity

October 22, 2023
Dr. Allen Holmes

If we want a mountaintop experience with God, we have to pass the test of generosity.

REVIEW: Giving is a test of dependence.

  • ‭‭‭‭READ: Luke 12:31 “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.”
  • DISCUSS: How is your sense of security and safety affected by money? What do your emotions around finances reveal about your dependence on God?

REVIEW: Giving is a test of faith.

  • READ: Hebrews 11:17-19 “It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him. Abraham, who had received God’s promises, was ready to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, even though God had told him, ‘Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.’ Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead.”
  • ‭‭DISCUSS: Do you have any worries or stress about your current financial situation? What would it look like to fully trust God with your situation?

REVIEW: Giving is a test of obedience.

  • READ: Proverbs 3:9 “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.”
  • DISCUSS: What is the biggest challenge to your giving right now?

REVIEW: Giving is a test of maturity.

  • READ: 2 Corinthians 8:2-3 “They are being tested by many troubles, and they are very poor. But they are also filled with abundant joy, which has overflowed in rich generosity. For I can testify that they gave not only what they could afford, but far more. And they did it of their own free will.”
  • ‭‭DISCUSS: How has your heart and faith been affected by acts of generosity?
