"I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified."
1 Corinthians 9:27
Fasting teaches us to put aside our desires (both good and bad) for a season so that we can intentionally and willingly depend on God. We learn to hunger for the things of God more than the things of the world. Fasting prepares us to fight temptation and strengthens our spiritual resolve. We refrain from eating (or consuming things like entertainment, comforts, habits, etc.) for set periods of time throughout the year to hear God’s voice more clearly and renew our spiritual hunger for His purposes in our lives.
Using our Fasting planner, spend some time one day this week thinking through what fasting might look like for you sometime this month. Revisit your plan a couple more times throughout the week, praying through what the best and wisest way for you to fast will be in this season.
If you haven’t already, start practicing your fast this week. Journal or take notes each day, keeping track of how you feel (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually).
As a response to your fasting experience this month, do a random act of kindness for someone this week. It could be buying someone’s meal, paying for the person behind you in the drive-thru, offering to watch someone’s children, or whatever else comes to mind.
God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
