Sermon Guide

The Sin of Achan

July 28, 2024
Dr. Allen Holmes

We need personal and communal preparation for worship. The battle we face in life is not just a physical one but a spiritual one, where victory is linked to the state of our hearts. Both personal and collective victories are crucial in the life of a believer, and our individual struggles and triumphs impact our whole church community.

REVIEW: Heart's Role in Victory

  • READ: Matthew 15:19: “For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
  • DISCUSS: Reflecting on the story of Achan and his punishment, what does it reveal about the relationship between our actions and the state of our hearts? How can we guard our hearts to ensure they remain devoted to God?

REVIEW: Corporate vs. Personal Victory

  • READ: 1 Corinthians 12:26: “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” Galatians 6:2: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
  • DISCUSS: How does the idea that "when I win, you win" and "when you win, I win" apply to the community of believers? What are some practical ways we can support each other in our personal battles to ensure collective victory?

REVIEW: Role of Spiritual Hunger in Worship

  • READ: Matthew 5:6: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” James 4:8: “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
  • DISCUSS: How does intentional spiritual anticipation and preparation influence our worship experience? What practical steps can we take to cultivate a similar level of hunger and readiness in their own lives?
