REVIEW: Why we do something is more important than what we do.
- READ: Isaiah 29:13 “…the Lord says, ‘These people say they are mine. They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. And their worship of me is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote.“
- DISCUSS: Have you ever done a good thing for the wrong reason? Explain.
REVIEW: When we do good things for the wrong reasons, we become entitled.
- READ: Matthew 6:16 “And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get.“
- DISCUSS: Are there any situations or relationships in which you may feel entitled, proud, or self-reliant?
- DISCUSS: Do you ever experience envy or frustration when you see others succeed or experience blessing? Why do you think this is?
REVIEW: To defeat the spirit of Cain we must live by faith.
- READ: Hebrews 11:6 “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”
- DISCUSS: How can you take a step to ensure your faith is in God alone, and not in your ability to do the right thing or prove yourself in some way? In other words: how can you practice surrendering to God and trusting in his love?
