Bible Study

Overview

"All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

1 Timothy 3:16-17

Becoming more familiar with God’s Word helps us become more familiar with God’s heart.

Reading, studying, memorizing, and meditating on the Bible gives us the ability to hear God’s voice, understand our relationships, discern His will and purpose for our lives, and discover the truth. We believe that before you begin your day, God has something to say. We study the Bible daily to connect with and learn from God.

Lectio Divina (“Divine Reading”) is a way of listening while you read the Bible. It is an ancient tradition that many have used over the years. Try this practice:

  • Pray this prayer: Jesus, I come with no agenda but to hear your voice. Speak to me. Teach me. I am listening.
  • Read Psalm 119:33-40 very slowly (and maybe a few times in a row). Pay attention to images, phrases, or words that stand out to you and let that be your focus.
  • Then take some time to pray and ask God the following questions as you are patiently listening:
  • What does it tell me about God’s character?
  • What does it tell me about God’s purpose?
  • What does it mean to and for me?

Individual practice - to do on your own throughout the week

Choose a verse to memorize this week. If you’re unsure of what verse to pick, you can choose one of the following:

  • Romans 10:9 “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
  • John 16:33 “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”
  • Philippians 4:6 “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.”
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:18 “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”

It may be helpful to read it aloud, write it out, keep it on an index card somewhere easily visible, and focus on key words.
